The Luthier's studio Series
On October 25th from 6 pm until 9 pm, we will be hosting our first Luthier's studio event. We are meeting in the Recital Hall at Florida International University and you will have an opportunity to ask many questions regarding your double bass setup and many other things pertaining our beloved instrument. Come prepared to learn and bring your instrument if you need any type of adjustment(s). Our event is sponsored by Florida International University, Miami International Academy of Double Bass, Miami String, and the ISB. All classical and jazz artists and students as well are invited to participate. Miami International Academy of Double bass Playing is proud to present the Luthier's studio series. We want to expand our reach to the bass community not only with bass masterclasses and presentations but also by extending an invitation to those who set our instruments to perfection: The luthiers. This series is designed to get to know the tips from the experts in the field of repair and acoustics. A well-adjusted instrument yields better to our playing standards and we ought to have a good knowledge about what makes an instrument sound even better. Therefore, we are planning to meet at least four times a year to learn and discuss how to adjust our instrument in a one-on-one session with our special guests.



For the October 25th session, themes such as the double bass’ structure, its building materials, and each player’s setup will be explored for both classical and jazz upright bass players. Charley Winters of Miami String promises to squeeze centuries of bass evolution into a few “hands-on” seminars so that you may understand your upright bass setup for optimum playability and sound! Live demonstrations of double bass repair and setup will amuse audience members with tactile interactions. This hands-on knowledge is essential for every professional double bass artists and musicians. Expert tips and secrets will be revealed from string length to sound post placement to bridge height. Myths will be exposed and facts will be revealed.
